By this I want to emphasize the idea that one is never too old to start/learn something new - it is mostly question of the time needed to digest. On the other hand nothing should be considered impossible - not at least without trying it.
My school teacher encouraged his pupils to select a solder-yourself electronics kit from Kemo Electronics somewhere in 90s.. I build a parabolic microphone and found it fascinating how all the components were selected. Obviously it took years of training before I achieved level to be able fully comprehend the design.
My father used these radios in his tractors and combine harvester long before cell phones for communication. However, at night one could receive transmissions from Europe - perhaps even from Italy. Later in high school I got my amateur radio licence. After building my QROlle-tranceiver-kit I started collecting countries at 20 meters band (14 MHz). So far my farthest QSO is to Brazil with 10 W transmit power.
